Volunteer with GCAT!
GCAT is made up of a wonderful group of volunteers that, over the years, has turned into a great community! If you’d like to join our family, there are many ways to contribute your time and talents towards making Guelph a better, safer place for active transportation.
GCAT has a wide variety of opportunities to contribute — with varying time commitments and required skills. Most of our events are held between May and October each year, so most opportunities for helping out at events, marshaling at events, and serving as a bike valet will be during those summer and early fall months. Volunteering to help out with administrative tasks, serving on a community, and helping with advocacy work can be done year round.
Volunteer Roles
- Help with Administrative Tasks
GCAT works with volunteers to run some important operational aspects, such as maintaining information about memberships and donations - Help out at Events
Could include helping register or sign in event attendees, setting up tables or displays, etc. - Serve as a Bike Valet
Duties include checking bikes in and out at events and spreading the word about GCAT to event attendees. Each shift is usually a couple of hours long and undertaken with another volunteer. - Marshal at Events
Bike Marshals are volunteers charged with providing safety and support for biking events. In this role, you ride with the participants, help ensure the group crosses intersections safely, and make sure no one is left behind.
The time commitment per event includes:
a) an orientation ride ~0.5 to 1.5hrs (scheduled weeknights or weekends).
b) the day of the Event, arrive 30 mins before the ride, and then ride itself ~1.5 to 2.5hrs - Serve on a Committee
GCAT currently has three standing committees that do the vital work of the organization. Committees usually meet once a month.
• Programming and Events
• Advocacy
• Governance and Administration - Volunteer on Advocacy Issues
GCAT works to promote active transportation within the city of Guelph to elected city officials (including the Mayor and City Councilors) and city staff and more broadly provincially and federally, when the opportunity presents. This work includes advocating for specific projects and providing feedback on city strategies, budgets, and land use planning.
