GCAT - Guelph Coalition for Active Transportation

Volunteer with GCAT for Bike Month!

GCAT is thrilled to be involved in so many local in-person Bike Month events celebrating life on two wheels. We are looking for volunteer Bike Marshals and people to run our GCAT information booth.

What’s involved, and what is the time commitment?

Bike Marshals are volunteers charged with providing safety and support for biking events. In this role, you ride with the participants, help to make sure the group crosses intersections safely, and make sure no one is left behind.
The time commitment includes:
1. An orientation ride is usually scheduled the week before the Event ~0.5 to 1.5hrs (this orientation is scheduled on weeknights or weekends).
2. The day of the Event, you would need to arrive 30 minutes before the Event’s ride, and then the ride itself ~1.5 to 2.5hrs.

GCAT Information Booth, at some events, we have a booth with information about GCAT. You would hand out Guelph Bike Maps and the GCAT Information Pamphlet and talk with people about what we do and biking in the City. You always get to meet interesting, like-minded folks.
The time commitment includes:
1. An orientation session is usually scheduled the week before the Event ~0.5 to 1hrs (this orientation is scheduled on weeknights or weekends and can be virtual or in-person)
2. On the day of the Event, we run 2-hour shifts, the early shift includes set-up of the booth, and the end shift includes the break down.

Below are June’s events and activities you can volunteer for. Just click on the Volunteer links to sign up!

Bike Month Kick-off – Guelph Bike Day: June 4th, 2-4 in Market Square

This is the City’s kick-off event for Bike Month. Gather downtown to celebrate with a GCAT-organized bike ride. This is a family-friendly ride, so bring the kids and let’s get on our bikes. We’ll start and end the ride at the Market Square with some live music and general merriment.
GCAT needs bike marshals, and booth Volunteers.

2Rivers on 2Wheels – June 5th, 11-12

We are participating again in this year’s 2 Rivers Festival and leading a live ride. Join us as we explore Guelph’s River systems under pedal power. On this ride, you’ll get some geographic insight revealing the ancient riverbanks that mark the history of our Rivers’ Edge. Exploring by bike is thirsty work, but luckily you can reward yourself with a cold brew or two at the end of our 10 km trip.
GCAT needs bike marshal Volunteers.

Pedal Poll – between June 7th and 12th in communities across Canada

Join the thousands of people coming out to make a #bikefriendlycanada. Your participation in Pedal Poll/Sondo Vélo will help us get more people cycling everywhere. If you’d like to participate visit the VELO website:

Love Your Bike Festival – June 18th

We are happy to be partnering with the Love Your Bike group for this year’s festival and thrilled that we are meeting in person again! This event brings together Guelph’s cycling community with various cycling groups, bike shops and activities. The festivities begin at 9:15am at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 161 Norfolk Street (where it intersects with Suffolk). You can get a complimentary bike check, see some antique bikes and participate in the wrench off (~9:45). Registration for either the Easy Rider Parade (led by GCAT) or the Two Rivers Ride (led by GORBA) to Guelph Lake and back is open until 10:15am. Both rides end at The Wooly where there will be a BBQ.

Tour de Guelph – June 26th

This is a community set of rides and a fundraiser supporting Guelph General Hospital. The Tour de Guelph started in 2014 and, over the past 8 years, has raised more than $722,000. It has become one of Guelph-Wellington’s largest community sporting events.
This is an event designed for all ages and abilities with multiple cycling routes from the 5 or 10-km family-friendly rides and the more challenging 25km – 100km rides.
