Cycling Safety Tips

Whether you’re new to cycling or a seasoned rider, following safe practices helps protect you and others on the road. These tips will help you ride with confidence throughout Guelph.

Before You Ride

Check Your Bike
Before each ride, ensure your brakes work properly, tires are inflated, and chain runs smoothly. A quick safety check takes just a minute and can prevent problems on the road.

Wear a Helmet
A properly fitted helmet significantly reduces the risk of head injury. Ensure your helmet sits level on your head and the straps form a V-shape under each ear.

Be Visible
Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in low-light conditions. Ontario law requires a white front light and red rear light or reflector when cycling after dark.

On the Road

Ride Predictably
Maintain a straight line and signal your intentions to drivers and other cyclists. Avoid weaving between parked cars or making sudden movements.

Follow Traffic Rules
Cyclists must follow the same rules as motorists, including stopping at red lights and stop signs, yielding to pedestrians, and riding in the direction of traffic.

Use Bike Lanes When Available
Guelph’s cycling network includes dedicated bike lanes on many streets. When bike lanes aren’t available, ride about one metre from the curb or parked cars to avoid hazards.

Watch for Hazards
Be aware of road conditions including potholes, storm grates, streetcar tracks, and debris. Scan ahead so you have time to avoid obstacles safely.

Sharing the Road

Pass Pedestrians Safely
When using multi-use paths, slow down and announce your presence when passing pedestrians. A bell or friendly “passing on your left” helps prevent surprises.

Be Patient at Intersections
Intersections are where most collisions occur. Make eye contact with drivers when possible and ensure they’ve seen you before proceeding.

Report Hazards
Help improve conditions for all cyclists by reporting potholes, debris, or infrastructure issues to the City of Guelph or through BikeMaps.org.
