Better Streets

Posted on August 22, 2025 by Mike Hager
Connectivity and safety for all. It’s possible.

Wouldn’t it be nice…

Imagine a Guelph where parents feel comfortable letting their kids bike to school, where sidewalks are wide and welcoming, and where cyclists and drivers aren’t competing for space but sharing it safely.

At GCAT, we envision safer streets in Guelph for everyone who bikes, walks, or rolls.
We are working toward a city where people of all ages and abilities can move safely and comfortably, regardless of their mode of transportation.

🗺️ A New Way to See Our Streets

We are building an interactive map of Guelph that highlights areas needing safer infrastructure. For each location, we are developing renderings that show what these streets could look like with improvements in place.
Explore the map to see examples and learn where change is needed.

📝 Report an Area that Needs Improvement

Your experiences help us identify priority areas. If you know a street or intersection where biking, walking, or rolling feels unsafe, please share it with us.

📬 Reach Out to Your Councillor

Lasting improvements require political support.
Use our ward-by-ward councillor guide to identify who represents you and let them know that safer infrastructure for all road users is a priority for Guelph.

📊 Why This Matters

Cities around the world are reducing traffic deaths and serious injuries. For example, Helsinki recently recorded a year without a single traffic fatality.
In Guelph, between 2017 and 2025:
  • 1 collision occurred every 265 minutes
  • 1 person was injured every 13 hours
  • 1 fatality occurred every 107 days
  • 1 pedestrian collision occurred every 9 days
  • 1 cyclist collision occurred every 11 days
Read the City of Guelph Collision Report for more information.
These outcomes show that more needs to be done to protect all road users.

🚗 We All Hate Traffic

Traffic congestion affects everyone, whether driving, using a ride-share, biking, or walking.
As Guelph grows, relying on more cars will only increase congestion. By making it safe and practical to walk and cycle, we can reduce the number of vehicles on the road and ensure the city grows in a sustainable way.
Better streets will:
  • Improve safety for all users
  • Make more efficient use of existing road space
  • Support Guelph’s long-term growth

📢 What GCAT is Doing

GCAT is:
  • Listening to the experiences of residents on Guelph’s streets
  • Researching policy and design options that improve safety
  • Working with members, partners, Councillors, and City staff to identify solutions
  • Advocating at City Council and with the Province for safer infrastructure
One way to support this work is to become a GCAT member. Membership helps strengthen our advocacy and build momentum for change.
